Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate was a composed, tough tackling centre back who displayed true leadership qualities right throughout his career. He began his career as a trainee at Crystal Palace in 1989 and, after six years of loyal service, he moved to Aston Villa. It was here, under the then manager Brian Little, that Gareth established himself as one of the best defenders in the country and subsequently won his first of 57 England caps against Poland in 1996. He was rewarded for his continued excellence by being handed the captain’s armband during the 1996/97 season.

However, after handing in a transfer request, he moved to Middlesbrough in July 2001 for £6.5 million, becoming manager Steve McClaren’s first major signing and reuniting himself with Ugo Ehiogu, his former Villa team mate. He became their first captain to lift a major trophy with the Carling Cup Final success at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium in February 2004.

In June 2006 Gareth decided to call time on his distinguished playing career in order to succeed McClaren as the new Middlesbrough manager.
