James Auckland
Britain has not had a specialist doubles player in the Davis Cup team since Neil Broad made the last of his 11 appearances six years ago. But after finishing 2005 as Britain’s No.1 doubles player on the ATP World Rankings, James Auckland fits the bill.
James has more than consolidated this position. His call-up into the British Davis Cup Squad for 2006 was merited with a team debut against Serbia and Montenegro in Glasgow. And though the captain opted to go with the doubles pairing of Greg Rusedski and Andy Murray, there is no doubting James distinguished himself by showing everyone around him what team spirit is meant to be all about.
James got together with Andy Murray in San Jose and reached the quarter-finals before the young Scot won his first ever ATP title. Auckland & Murray continued their partnership both at The French Open & the U.S. Open.
In 2006 James’s reputation as one of the fastest rising doubles players on the circuit was warranted after beating Rafael Nadal & Feliciano Lopez at The Stella Artois Championships. James then followed this result by winning through to the 3rd round of Wimbledon, breaking into the World’s Top 100 for the first time.
On the singles circuit, James has 2 titles to his name. After several years as a professional, he credits psychological training carried out with Richard de Souza for his recent improvement. That paid dividends in September 2006 when he qualified & made quarter-finals of the ATP Tour event in Mumbai.
James recently played in The Wimbledon Championships 2007. He reached the second round partnering Stephen Huss in the men’s doubles and the second round Claire Curran in the mixed doubles.
